In summer, Phuket, known as a tropical holiday paradise, is located in southern Thailand. The endless sea and sky, along with the warm-hearted locals, make you forget the hustle and bustle of the world. Accompanied by the blazing summer sun and the clear waters lapping against the fine white sand, run to your heart’s content and enjoy the exhilaration of sweating—it’s the epitome of youth.

The Laguna Phuket International Marathon is one of the largest events in Thailand and a highly anticipated summer race for many marathon runners every June. Under the slogan “Run Paradise,” the Phuket Marathon features promotional banners surrounded by vibrant hibiscus flowers. Its biggest highlights include a tropical-style race course, a fun atmosphere, and a strong charitable spirit. In addition to lush green forests, runners may encounter mosques, magnificent Thai temples, monks in saffron robes, and even villagers smiling as they guide elephants—offering a deep sense of a harmonious society where diverse cultures and beliefs coexist. The slow, laid-back pace of local life and the simple warmth of the people create another beautiful scene.

Since registration opens two days before the race, you can arrive early to soak in the island’s holiday vibe. Summer water activities such as jet skiing and banana boat rides are not to be missed, or you can simply stroll along the beach, lie in a rattan hammock to watch the sunset over the sea, or indulge in a spa—all the joys of a true holiday paradise. There’s also a Pasta Party the day before the race to welcome the many runners who have traveled from afar, making it a great opportunity to connect with fellow athletes from around the world.

Racing against the waves

On the day of the race, over 5,000 runners from 50 countries around the world join in the event. To avoid the hottest hours of the day, the full marathon starts at 4:30 a.m. Running at night requires adapting to the darkness and the humidity of the island. The running route passes through beaches, Thai markets, local villages, cattle farms, and lush rubber plantations—sometimes racing alongside the waves, other times enjoying the comfort of shaded greenery. Every 2 kilometers along the route, there are hydration stations offering ice water, sponges, and tropical fruits like bananas to help runners cool down and recharge in the hot and humid weather. The Thai name for Phuket, Ko Phuket, means “mountainous island,” so there are inevitably some uphill sections that will challenge runners. The finish line is located at a top-tier resort in the northwest of Phuket, with the scenic o_ Lake nearby being equally captivating. Importantly, the full marathon distance of 42.195 kilometers is officially measured and certified by the Association of International Marathons, giving it significant prestige. Parents who enjoy bringing their children along for family fun need not worry—there are also a 5-kilometer walk and a 2-kilometer kids’ race, which attract thousands of participants each year, allowing children to enjoy the fun of running as well.
