The first 2014 camping and firefly-watching event in Namaxia, innovatively planned by the Kaohsiung City Tourism Bureau in collaboration with the Namaxia District Office, kicked off with great fanfare over the weekend holiday (April 12 and 13). Hundreds of tents sheltered 300 visitors who escaped the hustle and bustle to gather in the Namaxia tribe, enjoying the early summer starry sky and witnessing tens of thousands of fireflies. Everyone was left amazed, and the lively and fun campfire party created beautiful, unforgettable memories.

Hsu Chuan-sheng, Director of the Kaohsiung City Tourism Bureau, pointed out that Taiwan is home to approximately 60 species of fireflies, with over 20 found in Namaxia. The most common include seven species such as the black-winged firefly, mountain window firefly, and large black firefly. The area features five firefly-watching trails: Nansalu, Maya, Labiniya, Dakanuwa, and Maxinghalan, spanning a total of 10 kilometers. Through the Morakot Post-Disaster Reconstruction Project completed last year, entrance landscaping, interpretive signs, and other facilities have been installed, offering visitors a brand-new exploration experience. At the same time, visitors are reminded to cherish the fireflies and avoid catching them, ensuring they can thrive happily.
The Tourism Bureau stated that camping spots are limited. For those unable to join the camping event, they are welcome to sign up for travel agency package tours. The Tourism Bureau has partnered with four travel agencies (Gaoci, Carrefour, Wellcome, and China Youth Travel Service) to launch an eco-friendly firefly-watching two-day tour valued at over NT$3,800. From now until April 27, a limited number of spots are available starting at just NT$2,599 per person for a journey to sleep under the stars and alongside fireflies. The tour includes various indigenous DIY activities such as leather carving, washing figs, calendar painting, and mushroom picking, along with guided tribal tours led by local professionals.
During the event period, participants who register for the two-day tours offered by the aforementioned travel agencies will also be eligible to join the “Firefly Viewing Lucky Draw,” with a chance to win free hotel stay vouchers sponsored by hotels including Linsen, Huaxiang, Black Marlin, Mingui, Emperor, Jinyuan, and Huawang.
