Travel to Japan’s Kurobe Gorge and Oigawa Railway for free with your Alishan Forest Railway ticket

Japan’s Oigawa Railway and Kurobe Gorge Railway became sister railways with the Alishan Forest Railway in 1986 and 2013 respectively. Any travelers from Taiwan, from now until December 31, who take the round-trip journey on the Alishan train “Chiayi–Fenchihu,” can, before the end of this year, exchange one such round-trip ticket for one one-way ticket on the Oigawa Railway between “Shin-Kanaya–Chūbu-Sangaku National Park (Senoo)” or one round-trip ticket on the Kurobe Gorge Railway between “Unazuki–Kumonotaira.” Both full-price and half-price Alishan tickets are eligible for exchanging to the same class of ticket on the sister railways.

 

The Forestry Bureau stated that the Alishan Forest Railway resumed service to Fenchihu on January 27 this year. Passengers can take the mountain train and slowly ascend from Chiayi Station at 30 meters above sea level to Fenchihu Station at 1,403 meters, experiencing the changing forest landscapes across different altitudes. The round-trip ticket for “Chiayi–Fenchihu” costs just NT$408. Moreover, apart from the commemorative value of the hard-copy ticket itself, Alishan Forest Railway tickets also come with discounts for sister railways in Japan. Travelers can exchange them for a one-way ticket on the Oigawa Railway’s main line between “Shin-Kanaya–Chūbu-Sangaku National Park (Senoo)” (worth 1,720 yen, approximately NT$500), or a round-trip ticket on the Kurobe Gorge Railway between “Unazuki–Kumonotaira” (available in any car class, worth 3,420–4,480 yen, approximately NT$1,000–1,350).
