The Department of Geotechnical Engineering under Taipei City Government’s Public Works Bureau has planned a free firefly-watching eco-tour, set to take place on May 3rd along Yangming Creek in Zhuzihhu, Beitou. On the first day of registration, all 40 available spots were snapped up instantly. Huang Liyuan, head of the department, announced that an additional session will be held on May 4th. Registration runs from April 28th to April 30th, and is conducted entirely online. Those who have signed up for the May 3rd session are not eligible to register again, allowing more people interested in ecological conservation to enjoy a high-quality eco-experience.

Huang Liyuan explained that Zhuzihhu boasts a rich environment of terraced wetlands, surrounded by dense forests, with pristine water quality and diverse ecosystems. This eco-tour will be led by professional guides who will take participants on a walk along Yangming Creek to discover Taiwan’s native freshwater fish and shrimp species. With some luck, you might even spot the white-bellied rat snake foraging in the water. The guides will also teach you how to identify different frog species by their calls. Among them is a rather elusive yet common local frog called the “Chinese tree toad.” Though it sounds like a frog, its voice comes from the treetops—why is it called a toad when it’s a frog? During the transition from spring to summer, as night falls over Zhuzihhu, the bright white calla lilies begin to glow with the soft light of fireflies—from single sparks to vast starry seas of tiny lights, mirroring the twinkling stars above. Zhuzihhu is a stronghold for the yellow-margin firefly, and is also home to common species such as the red-chested black-winged firefly and the yellow-chested black-winged firefly. Learning booklets will be provided to help participants gain deeper insights into fireflies and their habitats. Additionally, astronomy experts will accompany visitors for stargazing, offering a chance to enjoy one of the most naturally beautiful nights in Zhuzihhu before summer arrives.
