The Alpine Route, connecting the Tateyama Mountain Range and Kurobe Gorge, runs along the main ridge of the Chubu-Sangaku National Park between Toyama and Nagano prefectures. With its series of 3,000-meter-class peaks, it forms the roof of Japan’s Northern Alps and is an international-class mountain sightseeing route, attracting over 10 million visitors annually.
The most popular attraction among tourists, the Snow Valley, is a roadway open only in spring, stretching from Murodo to Tengudaira. Due to heavy snow cover lasting more than four months in the high mountains, the Alpine Route operates for only three seasons each year. When the mountain roads reopen in spring, snowplows are used to clear the Alpine Route, leaving behind snow walls as high as 15 meters along the roadsides. The section between Tengudaira and Murodo-daira is opened during the opening season, allowing visitors to walk amidst the icy snow walls—an absolutely unforgettable and magical experience.
