Tokyo, a Time-Traveler’s Destination

Early in the morning, before the city of Tokyo had awakened, we boarded a train just after six and headed straight for the ancient city of Kamakura. The early morning carriage was sparsely populated, with people sunk in sleep, peaceful as a painting. A sudden gust of cold air rushed in through the opening and closing doors, keeping us alert—and for a moment, we felt as though we were part of the everyday scene of Tokyo life, so immersed and yet so detached. As the scenery outside the window transitioned from glass skyscrapers to low-rise houses, we felt the gradually awakening city and the warmth of the May sunlight spilling over our bodies. Stepping out of Kamakura Station, a refreshing breeze greeted us, with the morning’s light wind carrying an aura of simplicity and tranquility. There was an unprecedented sense of peace and contentment in the crisp air.

A Morning Bathed in Happiness

 

It wasn’t even eight o’clock yet, but quite a few people had already gathered in front of the restaurant Kobakaba. That day happened to coincide with a large blue-and-white stripe market taking place on Yui Beach Street. Adults and children alike were dressed in nautical blue-and-white stripes, as if they had arrived early at a beautiful seaside in summer. Under the sunlight, dazzling cosmos flowers, excited children, and performers carrying instruments created a scene of harmony and joy, as if we had stumbled into a utopia. Restaurant Kobakaba combines traditional Japanese breakfast sets, hand-poured coffee, a doughnut stand, and a countryside music performance. We found a window seat surrounded by greenery, savoring the most authentic Japanese breakfast—a simple sunny-side-up or boiled egg paired with a salad and natto, hot steamed white rice, and a bowl of miso soup that tasted like home. Healthy, simple, and truly memorable. In the small dining space, musician KaMokuTAKAHASHI gently played a slack-key guitar, the melodious tunes flowing from his fingertips like the gentle embrace of the sea, with waves lapping softly, as if drifting under the blue skies of Hawaii. Amid the soft music, everyone’s face glowed with rapture and emotion.

Music knows no borders. The second group of performers, Kitchen Sisters, is a Bluegrass country music band primarily featuring string instruments. Their lineup resembles a lovely big family, with silver-haired Western faces and a mother holding her young child on stage—yet it all felt perfectly natural. The mandolin, banjo, and acoustic guitar accompanied beautiful vocals, and the cheerful, bright music had everyone gently swaying. The children’s innocent smiles lit up the space and infected everyone, bringing smiles to all.

Wandering Between Glamour and Decadence

As soon as you exit the north gate of JR Mitaka Station, you’re immediately struck by how different it is from the bustling city center. Pedestrians move more slowly, tree-lined streets and charming bus stops welcome you, the roads are narrower, but the sense of connection between people grows stronger.

A Fantastic Journey of Luxury Cars and Art

 

Small yet beautiful streets and soothing greenery make it the perfect place to slow down and quietly soak in the unique Tokyo fashion that the greenery of Aoyama exudes. LEXUS’s first brand concept store, INTERSECT BY LEXUS TOKYO, opened last summer and quickly became a standout new attraction among the luxury brands lining South Aoyama. Its distinctive exterior, composed of transparent glass and spindle-shaped wooden grids, looks like an exquisite gift box. The calm cocoa-colored door piques the curiosity of passersby, who often stop to take a closer look.
