MasterCard today released its latest “Global Destination Cities Index” (MasterCard Worldwide Index of Global Destination Cities). Among the 132 global destination cities, Taipei rose from 18th place last year to 15th, with a significant increase of nearly 500,000 international visitors, remaining one of the world’s most popular travel destinations.

From 2010 to 2014, Taipei achieved an annual compound growth rate (CAGR) of nearly 16% in international visitor numbers, the highest among the top 10 travel cities in the Asia-Pacific region. Not only that, but over the past five years, the annual CAGR of international visitor spending in Taipei reached as high as 18%, ranking first among the top 20 global travel cities, surpassing Dubai, Singapore, and Seoul in consumption appeal. At the same time, it has retained the top spot in Greater China for international visitor spending for the fourth consecutive year, demonstrating Taipei’s strong economic draw and emergence as a new Asian tourism consumption paradise.

 

According to the ranking of international visitor arrivals, after two years, London has reclaimed the title of the world’s top travel city in 2014, with nearly 18.7 million international visitors — its third time topping the list in five years. Last year’s champion, Bangkok, dropped to second place due to political tensions (16.42 million), followed by Paris (15.57 million), Singapore (12.47 million), and Dubai (11.95 million), with Dubai surpassing New York to enter the top five for the first time.

 

From 2010 to 2014, Taipei’s annual CAGR of international visitor numbers was nearly 16%, ranking fourth among the top 20 global travel cities, and surpassing the top three cities in this year’s index: London (6%), Bangkok (12%), and Paris (4%). Moreover, compared to the top 10 cities in the Asia-Pacific region, Taipei also claimed the highest CAGR, outpacing Singapore (9%) and Seoul (9%), highlighting Taipei’s remarkable growth in international tourism and making it one of the top choices for travel in the region.

According to statistics on international visitor spending, Taipei continued to shine this year, claiming the top spot in Greater China for the fourth consecutive year with US$10.8 billion, significantly ahead of Hong Kong (US$8.3 billion) and Shanghai (US$5.3 billion), where prices are higher than in Taipei. Even more impressive is that since the survey began in 2010, Taipei’s annual CAGR of international visitor spending has reached 18%, ranking first among the top 20 global travel cities, surpassing popular destinations such as Bangkok (13%), Singapore (11%), Dubai (9%), London (9%), Seoul (9%), Hong Kong (8%), and New York (7%). This shows that even amid a sluggish global economy, Taipei’s ability to attract spending remains strong, making it a new tourism consumption paradise in the Asia-Pacific region.
