Taiwan Black Bear Day and Little Yuan Zai’s Friends Unite for Conservation

To accommodate the large summer crowd, Taipei Zoo has extended the opening hours of the Giant Panda House every Saturday from July 5 to August 23 until 6:10 PM. Everyone is welcome to come see Yuan Zai!

However, besides the panda Yuan Zai, the Formosan black bear – whose cuteness is no less than that of the panda – is currently facing challenges such as habitat destruction and human disturbance, resulting in a population decline to fewer than 600 individuals. To enhance public awareness of this native protected wildlife species – the Formosan black bear, remind people of the importance of conservation, and expand public participation in its preservation,The Taipei City Animal Protection Office and the non-profit Taiwan Black Bear Conservation Association will jointly host the 2014 “Taiwan Black Bear Day” event at Taipei Zoo on Saturday, August 9, 2014, aiming to transform the public's concern for the survival of the Formosan black bear into concrete conservation actions.

According to the Taipei City Animal Protection Office,on August 9, in addition to participation from over ten nature conservation groups and eco-conscious corporate teams setting up booths to promote black bear conservation efforts, there will be surprise giveaways of 500 black bear-themed items through activity checkpoints,allowing both adults and children to gain knowledge and awareness about conservation through interactive games. There will also be three “Speak Up for Black Bears” concerts, hands-on creative craft activities such as “dough figurine making” available for on-site registration, a “Bear Love Keeper” guided tour where you can meet the keepers caring for Taiwan black bears, and a year-long “Black Bear Installation Art” exhibition. These dynamic and static activities aim to let the Formosan black bear accompany citizens through an unforgettable summer weekend, while also inspiring enthusiasm for joining in its conservation.
The Taipei City Animal Protection Office reminds all interested children and adults to remember to come to Taipei Zoo between 10:30 AM and 3:00 PM on Saturday, August 9, 2014, to cheer for the adorable star – the Formosan black bear!
