Nagashima in Ehime Prefecture, Japan, only gained popularity in September 2013. The island has a total population of just 15 people, but over 100 cats. The ratio of humans to cats on this small island is extremely skewed, making it seem as if the cats are the actual residents — a true “cat island.” Local residents say the number of cats has naturally increased over time, and they have no plans to interfere with their population, choosing instead to let them live naturally.

Most of the residents on Nagashima are elderly. There are two ferry services to the island daily. The island has no commercial operations — not only are there no guesthouses or restaurants, there aren’t even any vending machines.
