Whenever we talk about lakes, the first image that often comes to mind is a pool of cool blue or green water. But does the world have dreamy pink lakes besides blue and green ones? ◎ Africa, Senegal — Lake Retba (Rose Lake)）
Hidden within the endless dunes and sandy deserts of Africa’s westernmost tip lies a beautiful oval-shaped pink lake — Lake Retba. Locals also call it the “Pink Lake.” It’s a salt lake covering just 3 square kilometers, with an extremely high salt concentration of up to 380 grams per liter. Much like the Dead Sea, even non-swimmers can easily float on its waters.

The stunning pink color of Lake Retba comes from the high concentration of salt-loving microorganisms (Dunaliella salina) in the water. These organisms produce a red pigment that absorbs sunlight and reproduces, ultimately dyeing the entire lake pink. As a result, the shade of Lake Retba can vary from light pink to deep red depending on the salt concentration.
The area around Lake Retba is usually peaceful and serene. There are no mechanized salt-harvesting tools here. You can often see local men with dark skin, shirtless, paddling boats to collect salt on the pink waters, while women in vibrant dresses bustle around the white salt mounds on the shore.

◎ Australia — Pink Lake Hillier
Situated on Middle Island, the largest island in the Recherche Archipelago off the southwestern coast of Australia, Lake Hillier is a pink lake surrounded by lush forests and edged with white salt rims. It was first discovered in 1802 by British maritime explorers.

Compared to Africa’s Rose Lake, Australia’s pink lake, enveloped by forest, presents a more striking contrast thanks to the surrounding greenery and white sandy beaches that separate the pink water from the deep blue sea.
