After Typhoon Morakot, the Sandimen Suspension Bridge urgently needed repairs. At the end of 2012, Pingtung County Government conducted an assessment and found structural safety concerns. With assistance from the Executive Yuan’s Reconstruction Council, they secured aid from the Red Cross Society to rebuild the Sandimen Suspension Bridge, which connects Sandi Village in Sandimen Township and Beiyeh Village in Majia Township. A groundbreaking ceremony was held on the morning of the 26th. In the future, with the bridge’s glass bead imagery, light sculpture design, and 24 storyboards as part of the surrounding approach art installations, Pingtung will have a glass bead bridge that tells stories.

This 262-meter-long Sandimen Suspension Bridge, with an average height of 45 meters above the riverbed, is a joint effort by central, county, and township governments. The bridge project is aided by the Red Cross Society, with funding of NT$53 million. The surrounding approach roads and installation art are funded by NT$9.16 million from the Reconstruction Council, NT$3.5 million from the county government, and partial contributions from the Sandimen and Majia township offices. After the new bridge is completed, the old bridge will be retained but closed to the public.

On the 26th, the county government held the groundbreaking ceremony for the Sandimen Suspension Bridge project in the parking lot in front of Fuguwang Restaurant in Sandimen Township. The event was jointly presided over by County Magistrate Cho Jung-ho, Wang Ching-feng, President of the Red Cross Society of the Republic of China, and Chen Chen-chuan, CEO of the Executive Yuan’s Post-Typhoon Morakot Reconstruction Promotion Committee. Local figures including the Indigenous Cultural Park, Sandimen Township Chief Pan Sheng-fu, Majia Township Chief Chen Sheng-ming, and County Councilor Ko Fu-kuo also participated.Under the prayer and blessing of Pastor Lin Defu, it is hoped that the newly built suspension bridge will not only connect two tribes and attract visitors to boost tourism, but also make Sandimen once again a gateway for tourists to learn about Paiwan and Rukai cultures.
