The “New Taipei City Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival” has been hailed by international media as a must-visit festival in a lifetime. In recent years, Pingxi has become one of the pilgrimage destinations for both domestic and international travelers visiting Northern Taiwan, attracting nearly 2 million tourists annually. To allow visitors to deeply experience the railway scenery of the Pingxi Line, the charm of its old streets, and its coal mining history, the New Taipei City Government’s Department of Tourism launched the “Pingxi Mini Trip” tour package. It includes visits to three settlements—Shiding, Pingxi, and Jingting—sampling various tofu snacks at the famous Shenkeng Old Street (or trying a miner’s lunchbox at the Xinpingxi Coal Mining Park), launching an electronic sky lantern at Jingting’s new landmark—the “Sky Lantern Police Station”—and also comes with an exclusive, super-cute Round Baby traditional lantern. This yearthe New Taipei City Government’s Department of Tourism is particularly keen to promote the concept of “mini trips”—encouraging slower-paced, less burdensome, and more enriching ways of traveling.
And the “Pingxi Mini Trip” is the first major itinerary recommended this year. On weekends, Pingxi is often frequented by domestic tourists, while many international visitors choose to come during weekdays. By using convenient public transport, travelers can better appreciate the historical richness and leisurely vibe of Pingxi. This tour also includes an exclusive opportunity for participants to launch
a Round Baby Kongming lantern in Pingxi,
hoping to attract more tourists to take advantage of the “Taiwan Good Bus Muzha-Pingxi Line” to “see Round Baby in Muzha, enjoy tofu in Shenkeng, and release sky lanterns in Pingxi,” experiencing a unique road trip through Pingxi.

After participants confirm payment and personal details, it is expected that one large bus tour per week (Pingxi, Shiding, Jingting + Shenkeng) will commence in late September, with a limit of 40 people per group. Starting in late October, two medium-sized bus tours per week (Pingxi, Shiding, Jingting + Lingjiao) will begin, with a limit of 18 people per group. A total of 500 spots are available between the two types of bus tours. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis until all spots are filled—don’t miss out if you’re interested.
