In winter Scandinavia, a world of ice and snow, after a day of travel, it feels blissful to retreat to a cozy hotel and enjoy a warm cup of coffee. But in Sweden, one business has gone against the grain by creating an Ice Hotel (Icehotel), a truly unique concept that attracts over 50,000 guests each winter season, making it one of the region’s most popular attractions.

Ice Hotel is rebuilt every year, typically opening around December and operating until April or May of the following year. This year marks its 21st year. Each room — including the main structure, interior design, furniture, and beds — takes two weeks to build. Each is an individual artwork carved from the ice and snow of the Torne River. Due to the extremely low temperatures, the hotel also provides extra-thick foam mats, reindeer skins, and functional sleeping bags so guests can sleep soundly in the ice rooms.
