After winter sets in, the Otaru Canal becomes gentle and romantic. Especially since 1999, local residents have initiated the Otaru Snow Light Path festival on their own, placing candles along the canal. The soft glow of the candles illuminates the quaint streets, filling the city with a dreamy and colorful atmosphere. The 17th Otaru Snow Light Path in 2015 is also scheduled to take place from February 6 to 15.

Since 1950, local middle school students have annually placed six snow and ice sculptures in Odori Park for exhibition, which gave birth to the Sapporo Snow Festival. Today, the Sapporo Snow Festival has become a major winter event in Sapporo, featuring numerous ice sculptures displayed throughout the city, centered around Odori Park. A giant snow slide is also a perennial highlight of the festivities.
