In addition to the church he designed...“Church on the Water”was once hailed as the “world’s top dream wedding church,” and before that, Tadao Ando also designed“Church of the Wind”and“Church of the Light.”Each of these three churches has its own unique features, exuding romance and beauty, and is collectively known as the “Tadao Ando Church Trilogy.”

Unlike other architects, he takes the pursuit of eternity and the spiritual expression of detail as his philosophy, focusing on the play of light and shadow, and emphasizing the expression of natural elements such as wind, water, and air. He carves out spaces from nature and redefines the meaning of architecture's existence.

The Church of the Wind is located on a mountaintop, offering a view of Osaka Bay from within the church. Due to the terrain, the church is built in a concave shape, comprising the main hall, bell tower, and corridor. The glass corridor of the church leads into the interior, and the openings at both ends of the corridor create a wind tunnel effect—even slight sounds can produce strong reactions. The cross inside the church is made of reinforced concrete, as if telling the story of how the stone is hardened as iron by the wind.

● Church on the Water (Hokkaido, 1988)
The cross in the Church on the Water is situated in a pond, and its reflection in the water, along with the serene atmosphere, immerses visitors in romantic imagination. This is a small chapel specifically designed for weddings. The entire space is filled with natural light, evoking a solemn spirit of religious ritual. Facing the pond, couples can directly interact with and gaze upon nature, witnessing the passage and change of time.
