The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has released aerial night images of Taiwan taken from outer space 223 miles (358.88 kilometers) above Earth, which have recently gone viral online. The small outline of Taiwan is clearly illuminated by the glow of its city lights, with shimmering spots on the sea surface. Many netizens have exclaimed in amazement, “What a beautiful sweet potato!”

As can be seen in the image, the three major metropolitan areas in western Taiwan — northern, central, and southern — are brightly lit, connecting with the eastern part starting from Yilan’s lights, outlining Taiwan’s adorable sweet potato shape. Off the northern coast, fishing boats operating at sea resemble dots of starlight scattered across the water, making the beautiful island of Taiwan a sight to behold.
