▲ Cheongnagui Oreum is one of Daegu’s historically significant sites. Visiting here feels like traveling through a time tunnel and experiencing the traces of the past.

3. Cheongnagui Oreum
Cheongnagui Oreum is a central location where Christianity took root and flourished in Daegu, as well as the dawn of the city’s modernization. Walking through the old alleys here feels like stepping back in time to 1900s Korea, allowing you to deeply sense the historical weight of the past century.

Koreans often sang a song called “Si-woo” (Thoughts of a Friend) during their school years. Cheongnagui Oreum is the setting that inspired the lyrics of this song. Park Tae-jun, a pioneer of modern Korean music from Daegu, had his poet friend Lee Eun-sang write the lyrics based on Park’s love story, and he composed the melody himself—thus giving birth to this romantic ballad. Many Korean visitors silently sing along when they see the lyric stone monument, showing the song’s enduring charm.

▲%The area around Cheongnagui Oreum is dotted with churches, giving it an uncanny European vibe. Strolling around Cheongnagui Oreum, you should also check out Daegu’s March 1st Movement Road. This was the path taken by students during Korea’s anti-Japanese independence protests. There is also a speaker system here where visitors can press a button to hear the passionate cries of the students, getting a feel for the Korean national spirit.
