Romantic Spring Festival of Flowers: Southern Cherry Blossoms and Rapeseed Blossom Festival Begins

Starting every February, around 800 Kawazu-zakura cherry blossom trees along the Aono River in Minami-Izu Town gradually come into full bloom. The delicate pink blossoms set against the bright yellow rapeseed flowers exude a serene and elegant springtime charm, attracting large crowds of spring tourists. Each year, the “Southern Cherry Blossoms and Rapeseed Blossom Festival” is also held, drawing millions of visitors. This year’s 17th edition of the Southern Cherry Blossoms and Rapeseed Blossom Festival runs from February 5 to March 10 — a one-month event.

Strolling along the banks of the Aono River, you’ll find rows of cherry blossoms blooming neatly along the river dike like pink clouds, complementing the dazzling golden rapeseed flowers on the ground — a truly idyllic scene. During the festival period, numerous vendors set up stalls nearby, allowing visitors to not only enjoy the blossoms but also sample local handmade steamed buns or snacks. Free sakura tea and sweet rice wine are also available for guests to try.
