The firefly-watching season has arrived. From April 18 to August 16, the Taichung City Scenic Area Administration and the Taiwan Purple Crow Butterfly Conservation Association are hosting spring firefly and butterfly appreciation activities in the Daking Butterfly and Firefly Conservation Area. The entire event is free and everyone is invited to bring the whole family to experience the wonders of nature together.

The Taichung City Scenic Area Administration announced that from April 18 to May 2, three consecutive Saturdays, guided eco-tours on fireflies will be held in the Daking Butterfly and Firefly Conservation Area. The tours run from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM and include basic information about fireflies and rhinoceros beetles, the release of firefly larvae, a meet-and-greet with rhinoceros beetle larvae, a visit to the fireflies’ home (habitat), as well as night-time open-air lectures on firefly ecology.

Considering the ecological carrying capacity of the activity site, each firefly-guided tour session is limited to 50 participants. Those wishing to join the guided tours can register starting at 7:00 AM on the Monday of each session week, until all slots are filled. (Registration URL: http://www.purplebutterfly.org.tw). The night-time firefly ecology lectures held from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM during each session do not require advance booking (no souvenirs or dinner provided).

Additionally, visitors are reminded that the firefly conservation area is a manually maintained space with limited grounds. Therefore, on the days of the event (April 18, April 25, and May 2), please park your vehicles in the peripheral parking lots after 6:00 PM instead of driving into the campsite area. It’s recommended to wear long pants and sports shoes, cover your flashlight with red cellophane, and leave only memories — no litter.
