Witness the Most Beautiful Galaxy: The Hakodate Nebuta Aquarium's Galaxy Tank Reopens

Hakodate's Nikkaen Marine Park's famous "Galaxy Tank" reopened on April 25th again this year. The spectacle of around 10,000 sardines swimming in schools, combined with lighting and music, presents different seasonal atmospheres to visitors. From now until May 31st, the Galaxy Tank will be featuring a spring-themed version with cherry blossoms and fresh sprouts as its main motifs.

Hakodate Nikkaen Marine Park is a marine park full of Nordic style. Its exterior is modeled after Egeskov Castle, and the massive aquarium built as an ocean ecological pavilion is a huge fish display facility where you can see up to 400 species and more than 10,000 creatures. Inside the pavilion, there is an underwater tunnel where you can experience walking on the seabed, an exhibition area where you can touch aquatic animals, dolphin and sea lion performances, and more—fun for both adults and children. The huge tank located on the underground floor, the "Galaxy Tank," houses 10,000 sardines and sharks. The sight of tens of thousands of sardines swimming in schools, paired with dazzling lights and music, showcases different seasonal vibes to visitors. The silver bodies of the fish, illuminated by lights, swim rapidly in patterns that are sometimes rhythmic, sometimes chaotic, creating a breathtaking spectacle. Additionally, the adorable penguins' twice-daily walks in Nikkaen Castle Plaza are a highlight not to be missed.
