Want to see fireflies in Taipei? Better hurry—Bamboo Lake in Yangmingshan is in its calla lily season until the end of May, with the flowers now in full, enchanting bloom. Come nighttime, you can also witness the magical sight of twinkling fireflies. The Taipei City Department of Urban Development launched the “Bamboo Lake Free Firefly-Watching Guided Tour” on May 9 at Yangming Creek in Bamboo Lake to give more visitors a chance to explore the unique ecological environment of the stream.

Actually, you don’t need to travel far—beautiful fireflies can be seen right in the mountains of Taipei, with numbers that rival those in central and southern Taiwan. On the evening of May 9 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, the Department of Urban Development will lead a free guided firefly-watching tour. As you stroll through the calla lily fields at night and see the fireflies dancing above, it feels like magical woodland sprites twirling over snow, complemented by a star-studded sky—it’s like stepping into the fantastical world of Alice in Wonderland.
