Taichung’s First Literary Park Opens – Stroll and Read Amidst Old Trees and Historic Buildings

Taichung has a new attraction to explore. What was once a Japanese colonial-era police dormitory has, after more than a year of planning, design, and construction, been transformed into the city’s first “Taichung Literary Park.” It officially opened on April 29 this year, becoming a new cultural highlight in Taichung’s cultural city initiative. In addition to preserving precious old trees such as banyans, mango trees, and longan trees, the park also features a literary plaza, a literary pathway, storytelling walls, and tree-shadow walls—offering a highly poetic atmosphere. Every Saturday, junior volunteers provide regular guided tours. Why not visit the park on a holiday and immerse yourself in its literary ambiance?

Taichung Literary Park is located at the intersection of Liuchuan East Road and Zili Street, next to the Fifth Market in West District, covering an area of 2,887 square meters. The buildings in the park were originally police dormitories from the Japanese colonial period. Thanks to extensive efforts in preservation and rescue, what was once a ruin slated for demolition has now become a literary park for the public. As part of the Taichung City Government’s “Cultural City of Central Taichung” initiative, various attractions have been linked together. Following the establishment of the Literary Museum, nearby sites such as Liuchuan River, the Prefectural Office, the Martial Arts Field, and the Fifth Market, along with the public bike-sharing system, form a literary trail that allows more people to explore Taichung and experience the charm of the cultural city.
