“Detective Bookstore” is tucked away in the alleys near Taipei’s Roundabout, with a sign featuring Sherlock Holmes’ silhouette puffing on a pipe right at the entrance, declaring this spot as a little secret base for detective fans. The Detective Bookstore is Taiwan’s first independent bookstore specializing in crime, mystery, and spy novels. The stories here come from all over the world, new and old alike—no matter which detective you admire, you can find traces of them here. In addition to books, the Detective Bookstore also sells antiques, handmade design items, and detective-themed goods brought back from abroad.

Formerly known as “Cup Cup Grocery,” the Detective Bookstore has collected exquisite antiques from Europe, the United States, Japan, China, and Taiwan, many originating from old residences and century-old businesses in Dadaocheng. Each item is hard to come by and has a story. Once you step into the store, the owner is more than happy to share the tales behind these antiques—from small items like cigarette cards, matchboxes, posters, and pencils exported to Japan by a century-old stationery shop, to larger ones like paintings, solid wood storage boxes, lighting, and furniture. Everyone who visits here has the chance to become the new custodian that continues their emotional and spiritual legacy.
