Located in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India, the Taj Mahal, meaning ‘Crown Palace,’ was erected during the reign of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan (Shâh Jahân) in memory of Mumtaz Mahal, his beloved consort.

The Taj Mahal is considered a treasure of Mughal architectural art, combining elements of Iranian art, Islamic art, as well as Indian art. Construction of the Taj Mahal began in 1631 and took over a decade to complete. Shah Jahan spared no expense in creating this vibrant and magnificent structure as a tribute to his beloved, resulting in the completion of this grand project. The Mughal emperor deployed thousands of elephants to transport a variety of precious stones and luxurious materials from around the world: white marble from Rajasthan, jade from Punjab, malachite from Tibet, lapis lazuli from Sri Lanka, red jasper from Persia, and twenty-eight other types of precious metals and gemstones.
