After a long, silvery winter, Hokkaido bursts into a riot of colors as flowers bloom everywhere. Among them, the most eye-catching floral event from early May to early June is the two major shibazakura festivals held at Tōmokusō and Takinoue Shibazakura Parks... The 2015 Tōmokusō Mountain Shibazakura Festival runs from May 3 to June 7, while the Takinoue Shibazakura Park Festival takes place from May 9 to June 7.The blooming period lasts one to two months!

The 2015 Tōmokusō Mountain Shibazakura Festival runs from May 3 to June 7, with special evening light-up events held on weekends from May 22 to May 24. Fireworks are launched every evening from 7 to 9 pm during the light-up period, adding even more romance to Abashiri’s nights. Tōmokusō Park also offers facilities such as an observation deck, a park-guided sightseeing bus, and electric vehicles for visitors. There is also a full range of local specialties and foods themed around shibazakura, among which the light pink shibazakura ice cream is a must-buy delicacy for many visitors. Additionally, there is a Yamatsuri Shrine that is not to be missed—a particularly striking pink torii gate surrounded by shibazakura, making it arguably Japan’s most dreamy and pink-themed shrine.
