Rush to worship at Japan’s adorable cat temple for luck and healing vibes

Japan seems to be a paradise for cats, with numerous cat-themed attractions everywhere, whether it’s cat cafés or Tashirojima (Cat Island) in Ehime Prefecture, all of which are impressive. Located in Echizen City, Fukui Prefecture, Mibu Hōshōji Temple was originally a Buddhist temple dedicated to the Buddha. But since 2013, the temple has taken in dozens of stray cats that were abandoned or sick. Thanks to the careful care provided by the resident monks, these once-sickly cats now look healthy and happy. With over thirty cats currently being cared for, they have become the temple’s stars, attracting many cat lovers who come to admire the cats while paying their respects.

Additionally, local residents and tourists also chip in to help cover the costs of spaying/neutering and vaccinations, working together to care for these cats, forming a unique and friendly bond. Unlike visiting Cat Island, where you’re restricted by ferry schedules, getting to Mibu Hōshōji Temple is much more convenient. Here, you’ll find cats lazily resting or strolling around, which can’t help but lift your mood.
