Taiwan’s Summer Flowers: A Battle of Blooms – Lotus vs. Love Flower in Popularity

Spring into summer brings a profusion of blooms. After the May Snow season of tung blossoms, flowers such as phoenix trees, lotuses, hydrangeas, golden rain trees, agapanthus, and daylilies burst into color across Taiwan, offering spectacular views. Here's a guide to flower-watching spots around the island. When the rain clears and you have time, head out and enjoy them!

● Lotus

The elegant and serene lotus begins to bloom in June. Tainan’s Baihe District hosts its annual “Baihe Lotus Festival” starting June 7th. As the region with the largest area of lotus cultivation in Taiwan and known as the “Lotus Township,” Baihe has made flower viewing more convenient this year with the launch of the “Lotus Viewing Bus” by the Tainan City Government. Riders with an electronic ticket can enjoy free rides (within 8 kilometers), taking in the vibrant lotus blooms along the way while savoring a leisurely journey.

Additionally, at the entrance of Zhongxing New Village in Nantou, the coconut-lined boulevard is currently graced by a stunning display of lotus blossoms, even more prolific than previous years, with peak viewing expected to continue through early June.

● Alpine Rhododendrons

Beyond the lowland flower seas, the annual high-mountain rhododendron season at Hehuan Mountain National Forest Recreation Area has also arrived. From now until the end of May is the best time to admire these blooms. Hike up to take in the sweeping views of Hehuan Mountain’s peaks alongside the gorgeous alpine rhododendrons—it’s a truly refreshing experience.
