Is love really too heavy? The Paris Love Lock Bridge, which has witnessed countless love stories, will have all of its padlocks—symbols of undying love—completely removed starting June 1st by the Paris municipal government to safeguard the historic site and ensure pedestrian safety. From now on, this once romantic bridge can only be seen in old photos and movies.

Since 2008, the trend of attaching padlocks engraved with lovers’ names began on the Pont des Arts (Bridge of the Arts) in France. Couples from around the world who came to this city of love naturally followed this seemingly romantic practice—locking a padlock on the bridge’s railing and then tossing the key together into the Seine River as a symbol of eternal togetherness. This gave the Pont des Arts the beloved nickname of the “Love Bridge,” and to date, over a million “love locks” have accumulated.
