When visiting Korea, in addition to must-try specialties like kimchi bulgogi and spicy stir-fried rice cakes, what truly amazes visitors are the various imaginative desserts. The competition among Korea’s wide array of themed cafés and restaurants is fierce, and in order to stand out from the many competitors, they all pull out all the stops to offer distinctive dishes that capture the hearts of tourists. In addition to the previously popular honeycomb ice cream, the most trendy items lately are natural-style desserts that incorporate edible clouds, lightning bolts, and rainbows into their sweets—offering not just novelty but also a touch of imagination.

● Rainbow Cake
DORÉ DORÉ, nestled in the alleys of Sinsa-dong, has sparked a craze in Korea with its array of brightly colored, whimsically shaped cakes. Among the most talked-about recently is the rainbow cake featured in a music video by the K-pop girl group SISTAR. The cake features seven vibrant layers—red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet—stacked to create an ultra-dreamy appearance. Beyond the rainbow cake, the other desserts are equally adorable, including cakes topped with rock candy on cream and others loaded with M&M’s, sure to drive any dessert lover wild!

● Rainbow Cake Roll / Aurora Toast
In addition to the eye-catching rainbow cake, there’s another rainbow-inspired treat: the rainbow cake roll from FRANK’S in Yongsan-gu. This colorful cake is wrapped in light, not overly sweet cream, delivering the charming allure of a rainbow bite by bite—making it a hit among young people. The shop also offers another super popular item: “Aurora Toast.” Fresh out of the oven, it has a crispy exterior and soft interior. When you tear off a piece, you’ll discover healthy fillings like walnuts and cranberries hidden inside for a delightful surprise. For those concerned about too much food coloring, FRANK’S also offers other sweet treats such as éclair towers, French butter bread, and croissants, which are also very popular. Note that the rainbow cake roll is freshly baked daily at 12 noon and 5:30 PM—don’t miss your chance to try it if you’re visiting!
