On a hot summer day, biting into a big watermelon instantly cools you down — just the thought of it is refreshing. Recently, a bakery in Yilan launched an adorable watermelon toast. With its green crust featuring some black streaks, when you slice it open, you’ll find bright red and vivid yellow “flesh” (bread) inside, looking just like a real watermelon — extremely eye-catching. Even celebrity Xu Ruotong recently shared this watermelon toast on her official fan page, praising it as “Such an amazing toast — you win!”

Yilan’s watermelon toast comes from Kiwi Bakery & Handcraft in Jiaoxi. The owner, inspired by children's book author Jimmy Liao, has created many imaginative breads based on his artworks. At one point, they whimsically crafted a bread version of the Starry Sky Train from Yilan’s Jimmy Square — using light cream cheese as the body, decorated with chocolate and cookies. This charming little bread train was displayed at the shop entrance and attracted lots of attention. Since then, they’ve continued to roll out various breads and desserts inspired by Jimmy Liao’s stories, drawing fans from far and wide.

Lately, the owner came up with the idea to launch the watermelon toast again. Using red food coloring (from strawberries) and yellow food coloring, they kneaded the colors into milk bread dough to create two types of “flesh” — red like a large watermelon and yellow like a small round watermelon. The bright green skin is made from matcha, giving off a subtle matcha aroma. The black seeds and streaks are made from charcoal powder. After baking, the watermelon toast magically appears, with its adorable look. Each slice is sold for NT$80, and it became an instant hit with fans — especially after celebrity Xu Ruotong posted about it on her fan page, further fueling a watermelon craze in Yilan’s Jiaoxi area.
