Situated in Shirakawa-go, north of Nagoya in Gifu Prefecture in central Japan, this area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Shirakawa-go offers unique charm all year round. In addition to the dreamlike beauty of its surrounding nature, Shirakawa-go’s main attraction lies in its one-of-a-kind house designs. The uniquely slanted thatched roofs are designed to withstand the region’s heavy winter snowfall, and this feature is known as the “gassho-style” design — a typical and traditional architectural style unique to the area.

Shirakawa-go is home to over seventy gassho-style traditional houses, spread across three small villages: Ogimachi, Suganuma, and Shanuki. Among them, Ogimachi alone has fifty-nine gassho-style houses, making it the most popular tourist destination in the region.
