In recent years, Southeast Asian island travel has become increasingly popular—not only because of its accessibility for Taiwanese travelers, but also due to the richness of activities on offer. One of the emerging island destinations is Cebu in the Philippines, just a 3-hour flight from Taiwan, which has recently gained fame for its exclusive whale shark swimming experience. Before planning your trip to Cebu, be sure to add these 3 must-do activities to your itinerary—because if you don’t do them, it’s as if you never visited Cebu at all.
1. Swimming with Whale Sharks
“You have to see this at least once in your life”—while the phrase may sound a bit dramatic, it’s not an overstatement when it comes to the experience of “swimming alongside whale sharks as big as buses.” Swimming with whale sharks has become a globally popular diving activity in recent years, and the most well-known—and almost the only—place where you can get so close to them is Cebu, Philippines. Watching these massive creatures swim gracefully past you without the slightest fear is an absolutely unforgettable experience.

2. Sardine Run
Aside from the unmissable whale shark encounter, the breathtaking and sensory-shocking sardine run is another must-do activity in Cebu, Philippines. There’s no need for deep diving or long waits—you can witness the most spectacular wall of sardines in your life within just a few seconds. These small sardines move in schools, not only forming impressively neat formations but also moving in perfect unison, as if following a command. Their direction and speed are almost perfectly synchronized. The sardines sometimes form walls, sometimes circles, and other times resemble a swirling tornado, creating an awe-inspiring spectacle.

3. Jeepney Ride
On the streets of Cebu, you’ll see colorful jeepneys passing by almost anytime—red, green, blue, or even multicolored—adding vibrant splashes of color to the city’s roads. These jeepneys are actually Cebu’s public buses and the most commonly used mode of transport by locals. They were originally modified from U.S. military jeeps left behind after World War II. Jeepneys operate on a flag-down basis and charge based on distance traveled. Riding a jeepney and taking in the urban scenery is definitely one of the must-do experiences in Cebu.
