Dancing with sharks in the belly of the sea: Honduras' magical Blue Hole

The world is full of wonders. About 60 miles off the coast of Belize City near Honduras' Blue Hole lies a vast underwater blue abyss of endless deep blue. With its mysterious and perfectly round mouth, it looks from above like a deep blue eye of the sea. Aside from being the world’s largest underwater cave, it is also considered one of the top ten geological wonders of the world.

The circular mouth of the Blue Hole is surrounded by coral reefs, enclosing a tranquil expanse of deep blue. The diameter of the hole is 304 meters, and its depth is 145 meters—it's a limestone sinkhole. This unique landscape was initially formed during the late Ice Age when sea levels were lower, and later, as the sea rose, it became the astonishing sight we see today. Its depth of 145 meters gives it an especially intense deep blue hue. Some say it looks from above like a deep blue eye of the sea, while others describe it as the belly button of the ocean.
