Mugumuyu was closed for nearly a year starting 2014 due to damage from Typhoon Matmo and protests by the Tongmen Tribe. It reopened on June 6, 2015, allowing visitors to apply for entry under hiking and fitness reasons. Although it has only been open for nearly two months, due to the peak summer travel season and no limit on the number of applicants, nearly 20,000 visitors have applied to enter so far.
 
Additionally, since Mugumuyu reopened to pedestrians in June and banned vehicles, many people have crowded their cars near the control station to reduce walking distance, severely disturbing the tribal community. ThereforeThe Xiulin Township Office has decided to implement new measures starting August 1, reinstating a daily visitor cap of 600. Visitor vehicles can only be parked at the Mugumuyu Visitor Center, the Tongmen River area, and next to the banyan flood prevention road. Motorcycles can be parked at the old Taiwan Power Company dormitories. As for the garbage issue, the township office has allocated funds to hire local tribal members as cleaners and has also reached an agreement with the county environmental protection bureau to form a “joint inspection team” to penalize littering visitors.
