Many Taiwanese travelers consider Tsukiji Market a must-see when visiting Tokyo, but it will soon be closing at the end of 2016.

Tsukiji Fish Market was established by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government in 1935 in Chuo Ward. It became a popular destination for many Taiwanese tourists thanks to its wide selection of fresh seafood. Now, in preparation for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the Tokyo government has announced that the market will be relocated from Chuo Ward to Koto Ward and renamed “Toyosu Market.” The original Tsukiji Market will officially become history.

The relocation is currently scheduled to take place between November 3–6, 2016, with operations resuming officially on November 7. At that time, the 81-year-old Tsukiji Market will officially close its doors. Fish and produce wholesalers and other vendors in the original market will also move to Toyosu Market during this period and reopen there.
