Located on the 87th floor of Taipei 101, the damper assists the building in coping with swaying caused by strong winds and earthquakes. During Typhoon Soudelor, northern Taiwan experienced winds of at least Force 12, not only toppling numerous signs and roadside trees but also presenting an unprecedented challenge to Taipei 101. As a result, the building was closed to the public on August 8.

This powerful bout of Typhoon Soudelor not only deformed a post office mailbox crushed by a fallen sign—now a uniquely “typhoon-struck” attraction snapped by many—but also damaged numerous famous sites.
