What else can you do with egg waffles, aside from using cartoon patterns and the usual round shape? Tainan, known as the food capital, has local shops that have added creativity to traditional egg waffles, transforming them into ultra-cute shaped treats—there are cat paw shapes, screwdriver shapes, and more. They’re so Instagrammable, you won’t even want to eat them. Below, we’ve specially selected three popular Tainan egg waffle spots with unique shapes. Tomorrow’s afternoon tea is decided!

Xiao Yu Charcoal Egg Waffles
Have you ever seen pitch-black egg waffles? Xiao Yu Egg Waffles, located outside Brian’s Tea, specializes in “charcoal” egg waffles made without adding a single drop of water. There are two shapes: an adorable cat paw design and a simple oval shape.
These charcoal egg waffles are black all the way through, made with organic eggs, Wu Yue flour, Fresh Field small-farm fresh milk, Hokkaido Tokachi cheese, and bamboo charcoal powder. They are unfilled egg waffles with a smell reminiscent of cheesecake. Each piece is fluffy yet moist, with a hint of bamboo charcoal flavor. If you’re lucky, you might even get the limited-edition calico-patterned egg waffle, which is just as adorable for cat lovers.

Toolman Egg Waffles
Located on Jinhua Road in Tainan, Toolman Egg Waffles started trial operations at the end of December last year. With their adorable tool-shaped egg waffles, they’ve slowly gained a reputation in Tainan. The owner jokingly calls himself the “foreman,” selling egg waffles in the shape of tools. Each pack contains five pieces: a screwdriver, wrench, saw, hammer, and hex key—get the full tool set in one go. The texture is crispy, unlike the usual soft egg waffles, and they’re available in limited daily quantities, sold out until restocked, so get there early if you want some.
