As travel becomes increasingly popular, many tourists have developed the habit of purchasing souvenirs during their trips abroad. For example, on trips to Japan, everything from adorable snacks and cosmetics to high-end appliances such as induction rice cookers and vacuum cleaners are among the most sought-after items. However, shoppers should pay extra attention: The Taipei Customs Office under the Ministry of Finance’s Customs Administration reiterated on the 2nd that all goods brought in by inbound travelers are subject to a personal duty-free limit of NT$20,000.Items exceeding NT$20,000 in value or those not within the duty-free category must be declared voluntarily. Failure to declare such items may result in confiscation or fines by customs authorities if discovered.

The Ministry of Finance’s Customs Administration reminds inbound travelers to note:The duty-free limit per person is NT$20,000, and the duty-free goods you bring back are restricted to personal or household use only.If the items are for commercial purposes or resale, the NT$20,000 duty-free allowance does not apply. Those who take chances and fail to declare items exceeding the NT$20,000 threshold may face confiscation or penalties under the Customs Anti-Smuggling Act or related regulations.

In addition, travelers bringing back 3C products such as iPhones from overseasare subject not only to the NT$20,000 duty-free threshold but also to a maximum quantity limit of five units. Any amount exceeding five units requires submission of an “Import License for Telecom-Controlled Radio Frequency Equipment” issued by the National Communications Commission.Only then can the items be imported legally.
