Taiwan’s Classic Cycling Routes: Top 5 Scenic Bike Trails in Hualien

Cycling has become one of the most popular national sports in recent years. Starting in August, the Ministry of Education's Sports Administration launched a voting campaign for the “Top 10 Classic Cycling Routes Across Taiwan,” themed around happiness. A total of 32 cycling routes from around the country entered the second round of selection, among which Hualien County had five routes—including Guangfu, Meiti Creek, Yufu, Happiness Connected–Hualien Bicycle Highway Network, and Two Lakes—which ranked the highest among all counties and cities in Taiwan.

The following are the top 5 Hualien cycling routes that made the shortlist:
● Two Lakes Bicycle Trail
The Two Lakes Bicycle Trail stretches 35.5 kilometers from Qixingtan Scenic Area – Deyan Fish Farm in the north to Liyutan Scenic Area – Visitor Service Center in the south. The route includes a coastal section from Qixingtan to Huaren Seawall, a pastoral section through Ji’an, and a mountain-hugging stretch that crosses Liyu Mountain, offering varied riding experiences along different segments.
● Meiti Creek Bicycle Trail

Riders can enjoy the natural winding course of Meiti Creek and the landscape of its flowing waters and riverside flora and fauna, as well as observe a rich and diverse bird population. In addition, this route connects Hualien Railway Station to Guofu Bridge, and to the north it links up with the newly completed Forest Sightseeing Bicycle Path. The path passes through traditional indigenous villages all the way to Xincheng Railway Station, allowing cyclists to fully experience the tribal scenery and culture.

● Happiness Connected – Hualien Bicycle Highway Network

Starting from the northern part of Shoufeng Township near the intersection where Provincial Highway 9 and Provincial Highway 9C terminate, this network connects to the well-known Liyutan Scenic Area. To the east, there are recreational spots such as Shoufeng Zhongshan Park, the Metasequoia-lined Country Road, Rufeng Zhuoyu, Hetian Countryside Japanese-Style Old Houses, Shuhu Cherry Blossom Path, and Bee Homeland Ecological Museum. To the west, the route begins along Shoufeng Street and links to local attractions including Fengchun Ice Shop, Lichuan Fish Farm, Wuwei House, Toyota Historical Museum, Shoufeng Township Historical Museum, Bilian Temple, the Century-Old Longan Tree in Taitung, Zhao Feng Ranch, and Yunshan Water—offering a blend of educational and leisure experiences. The area enjoys convenient transportation and abundant farmland, showcasing the distinctive rural scenery of the Huatung Valley.

● Yufu Bicycle Trail

This trail starts at Yuli Railway Station, follows the old railway line across the Xiuguluan River, and continues south to the former Dongli Railway Station, spanning a total of 10 kilometers. Built on a repurposed railway track, this dedicated bicycle path takes riders through some of Hualien’s most celebrated farmland landscapes, offering the chance to breathe in unpolluted, fresh air while being accompanied by the sounds of insects and birds during early mornings and evenings.
