In the past, many train passengers traveling between Hualien and Taitung would buy a rice ball sold at the Chihshang Station platform to tide them over. It wasn’t until 1962 that local vendors started replacing bamboo leaf-wrapped rice balls with wooden box-style lunchboxes — the now-familiar Chihshang rice lunchbox. After the fame of the Chihshang lunchbox spread, it helped make both Chihshang rice and the Chihshang area well-known nationwide.
