Walking through the streets of Tainan, you’re always drawn to its alleys and old houses — this city holds so many memories from the Japanese colonial period, waiting to be explored and appreciated. Hidden away in an alley on Zhongxiao Street in Tainan City, there’s a guesthouse called “Hisatoan Kuto.”The guesthouse is close to the bustling Hai’an Road and Shentung Street, as well as the filming location of the movie “The Chef.” The surrounding area also retains many old buildings dating back to the Japanese era in Taiwan, almost like a time portal that instantly transports you to the simple, tranquil charm of old Japan.

“Hisatoan Kuto.“Hisatoan Kuto” is a renovated two-story house over 50–60 years old, featuring one room each on the first and second floors. It’s said that the building was once a dormitory for a nearby factory. Despite the rooms being only about 9 pyeong (approximately 30 square meters), they fully showcase traditional Japanese aesthetics — the scent of tatami mats, thoughtfully arranged tea utensils, and more, all making you feel as though you’ve stepped into a Kyoto residence.

Beyond the Japanese-style bedroom, the bathroom also stays true to the theme, crafted with care. As you step inside, the fragrance of Hinoki cypress fills the air, while the walls lined with thuja also emit a faintly fragrant aroma, soothing both body and mind. Additionally, opening the bathroom window reveals the courtyard, allowing you to enjoy the beautiful view of the garden while soaking in the bath — a truly delightful experience.
