10 Must-Visit Popular Spots to Admire Autumn Leaves in the Fall

Visiting Japan in autumn means encountering one of its most captivating sights — mountains and valleys blanketed in red leaves. The maple leaf cycle, which moves sequentially from Hokkaido southward, seems almost choreographed, taking turns to capture everyone’s admiration. While famous autumn leaf spots in the Kanto region may not be as concentrated in urban areas as cherry blossoms in spring, the nearby Tochigi Prefecture’s Nikko offers some of the most densely clustered and popular foliage sites. When the maples turn, streams of visitors flock to admire the colors.
 
● Senjogahara

Legend has it that Senjogahara was the ancient battlefield where the gods of Mt. Nantai and Mt. Akagi once clashed. In ancient times, this area was a lake formed after the eruption of Mt. Nantai, but it has since silted up into a wetland. Hiking along the wooden boardwalks, you’ll find flowers blooming in spring and summer, while in mid-October, golden-yellow grasslands are set off by flaming red foliage.

● Odashirogahara (Odashiro Lake)

Located west of Senjogahara, Odashirogahara is a wetland area surrounded by larch trees, offering a stunning view. In spring and summer, plants such as Japanese iris bloom here, creating a breathtaking scene. After heavy rain, the temporary Odashiro Lake appears — a dreamlike body of water that forms only once every few years.

● Ryuzu Falls

The Yukawa River flows through the ancient battlefield of Senjogahara before pouring into Chuzenji Lake. Just before reaching the lake, it splits into two graceful waterfalls known as “Ryuzu Falls” (Dragon Head Falls). The most beautiful times to see Ryuzu Falls are during autumn foliage and in May when the new greenery contrasts with the snow-white waters. Leaves and petals drift on the cascading stream, creating a poetic and picturesque scene.

Chuzenji Lake is a highland lake formed by the volcanic eruption of Mt. Nantai, the main peak of the Nikko mountain range. When the maples turn in autumn, the azure lake reflects the deep blue sky and the brilliant crimson foliage of late fall, creating an intoxicating scene that also served as the filming location for the movie “Lost Paradise.”
