Japan’s Joetsu Shinkansen will launch a brand-new train, the “Genbi Shinkansen,” in spring 2016. With “modern art” as its core concept, the project invited celebrated Japanese photographer and designer Mika Ninagawa to personally design the train, offering passengers an unprecedented riding experience.

The “Genbi Shinkansen” is renovated from the E3 series, the same model used for the Foot Onsen Train (とれいゆ つばさ). The train consists of six carriages, accommodating up to 105 passengers per trip, running between Echigo-Yuzawa and Shinano-Omachi. Mika Ninagawa themed the exterior after the “Summer Night Illuminations of Nagaoka,” showcasing the vibrant colors of Japan’s three major fireworks festivals. Inside, the train features works by seven contemporary artists, including paintings, photographs, and video installations by artists such as Naoki Ishikawa, Yusuke Komuta, and Kenta Kubo, among others. This stunning train is like a moving art gallery.

In addition, the train includes a café and a children’s room, offering snacks and beverages made with local ingredients from Niigata Prefecture. This blends modern art elements with a strong local flavor, making the experience highly anticipated.
