It’s not only in summer that you can see fireflies—visiting Alishan in winter also allows you to admire the beautiful nocturnal sprites dancing in the air. The Alishan area, with an altitude of up to 2,600 meters, boasts abundant natural resources and diverse terrain, providing the most suitable environment for firefly growth. This allows Alishan to offer dreamlike bioluminescent scenery all year round.

Currently,9species of autumn and winter fireflies have been recorded in Taiwan,8of which are found distributed in the mountainous areas of Alishan. Among them, the main species for viewing are the Window Firefly, Sawtooth Snow Firefly, and Sacred Tree Firefly. Unlike the flashing fireflies of spring and summer that dance through the night, the light emitted by autumn and winter fireflies is continuous. As night falls, fireflies slowly emerge from the grass, trailing light trails like meteors. Surrounded by the quiet and silent atmosphere, it feels as if time has stopped, leaving viewers breathless and awestruck, adding a touch of magic to Alishan’s nights.

Firefly viewing times vary across different altitudes and environments in the Alishan region. From November each year to March of the following year is the most active period. Areas such as the Shanlin Trail along Fenchihu, Dingshizhao Trail, Dinghu Community, Guanghua Community, Yuantan Nature Ecology Area, and Lijia Maple Viewing Trail have the richest firefly populations. The best viewing time is between 5:30 PM and 7:30 PM, with the peak activity lasting about an hour, so it’s best to arrive early.
