Taipei 101 crowned the world’s safest skyscraper

Taipei 101 has been ranked first in the list of the world’s top ten most resilient buildings by the American magazine “Popular Mechanics.” This selection was a collaborative effort between the publication and experts from Yale University in the United States, New York-based SHoP Architects, and the Vermont Resilient Design Institute.

Before Typhoon Soudelor hit in August this year, whether Taipei 101 could withstand its winds exceeding 66 meters per second—equivalent to a force 17 typhoon—drew significant attention from domestic and international media. Now, the latest article published by the American magazine “Popular Mechanics” has ranked Taipei 101 as the most resilient building in the world.

The report pointed out that Taipei 101 is located in an area frequently affected by typhoons and earthquakes. To guard against potential damage from natural disasters, the building’s 5.5-meter-diameter, 660-ton tuned mass damper is the key to its resilience. Recent powerful typhoons have repeatedly proven the building’s safety and high resistance.
