Announcement of Event Dates for Christmas in Wanjin 2015

As the year draws to a close, the festive atmosphere of Christmas can be felt everywhere towards the end of the year. The largest Christmas celebration in southern Taiwan is held in Wanjin Village, Pingtung. Since the second Sunday of December is the Feast of the Patroness of Wanjin Basilica, and Christmas is an important Catholic festival, almost every household decorates with Christmas lights and nativity scenes, creating the most captivating ambiance of the Wanjin Christmas season.

Wanjin Basilica was built without steel, using a mixture of crushed stones, lime, brown sugar, honey, kapok, and red bricks. After several restorations over the years, it still preserves the Spanish-style fortress architecture of its time, giving it a unique charm. Catholicism has been preached in Wanjin Village, Wanluan Township for 150 years, and nearly 80% of the residents in Wanjin Village and Chishan Village are Catholic, forming the largest Catholic community. The annual Feast of the Patroness and Christmas activities at Wanjin Basilica in December are major local events. Starting in 2011, Pingtung County Government began collaborating with Wanjin Basilica to organize the Christmas season event. From simple street decorations with lights in the beginning to later additions like 3D light shows and painted Christmas tree walls, the event has attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors each year to experience the sacred atmosphere of Wanjin Basilica.This year’s Wanjin Christmas season is expected to run from December 1st to December 25th. Plan ahead to visit Wanjin Basilica in Pingtung and experience a unique holiday atmosphere.
