St. Church of the Water Changes Hands as Chinese Consortium Acquires Hokkaido Hoshino Resort

Shanghai Yuyuan Tourist Mart announced on the 11th that it will acquire 100% of the shares of “TOMAMU Hoshino Resort” for 18.3 billion Japanese yen.

The Tomamu Hoshino Resort in Kamikawa Village, Hokkaido, spans a total area of 40 hectares, featuring four main buildings, 757 guest rooms, and is renowned for its ski slopes, Cloud Sea Café, and the St. Church of the Water designed by architect Tadao Ando. Its dreamlike scenery often attracts international tourists and makes it a well-known resort in the area. Among them, the St. Church of the Water gained fame after being featured in the music video for the song “Admire” by singer Fish Leong, becoming a dream wedding destination for Taiwanese couples.

The major shareholder behind Shanghai Yuyuan Tourist Mart, Fosun International, has in recent years invested in internationally renowned brands such as Club Med and Cirque du Soleil. This acquisition of TOMAMU Hoshino Resort in Hokkaido is seen as an effort to strengthen the outbound ski market for mainland Chinese tourists.
