Can you see the beauty of cherry blossoms blooming in Tokyo during winter? To give everyone a taste of a unique winter atmosphere, the Tokyo government has set up the Winter Cherry Blossom Illumination event along the Meguro River from now until December 25th, Christmas. Using eco-friendly LED lights to simulate the dreamy hues of cherry blossoms, the event allows pedestrians and visitors passing by the river at night to enjoy the beauty of cherry blossoms without waiting for spring.

In spring, the row of cherry blossom trees along the Meguro River creates a moving scenery that attracts many tourists for hanami and photos. In winter, the area around Shinagawa Ward’s Gotanda Riverside Plaza becomes the center of activity, with cherry blossom-lined paths stretching from Osaki to Gotanda along the Meguro River illuminated by up to 210,000 pink, peach, and gold lights. These colorful illuminations showcase a “winter cherry blossom” scene. Not only are the Winter Cherry Blossom Lights stunningly beautiful, but they also emphasize eco-friendliness—the electricity used is generated entirely from recycled cooking oil collected from nearby homes and restaurants, producing no atmospheric pollution.
