The most carefree place where art is woven into everyday life — Zhishan Zhishibai Art Village

Zhishan is situated in the northwest of New Taipei City, adjacent to Tamsui on the left and Shimen District on the right. Nestled between the mountains and the sea, it may be best known for its famous white bamboo shoots, nicknamed “beauty legs.” Zhishan is also the hometown of former President Lee Teng-hui, which adds a touch of legendary charm to this small town. But aside from that, do you know any other hidden secrets about Zhishan?

Upon arriving at Zhishan Zhishibai Art Village, the entrance feels much like a typical residential community found in places like Taichung or Tainan. There are few decorative installations aimed at tourists, nor are there many vendors drawn by crowds. Instead, what greets you is a serene and peaceful atmosphere warmed by the bright sunshine.

Zhishibai Art Village was originally just an ordinary residential community. The developer named it Zhishan Mountain Villa, and construction began around 1981 (the 70th year of the Republic of China). Its architectural style, however, is quite distinct from the common houses seen along the roadside. With rough cement surfaces painted in white, the buildings are standalone, two- to three-story homes, each with a small front garden. It’s said that the original intention was to create something resembling American-style architecture. Over 20 years later, whether due to its remote location or population outflow, Zhishan Mountain Villa has a high vacancy rate, and its residents are mostly elderly. This has naturally created a simple and tranquil atmosphere. The American-style homes, weathered by time, have unexpectedly developed a more enchanting charm than originally intended.

Fate works in mysterious ways. Zhishan Mountain Villa, where housing prices are much lower than in other parts of Taipei, has unexpectedly attracted young artists in recent years who seek quiet spaces for creativity. Gradually, it has evolved into an art community where life and aesthetics are inseparable. Mr. Li, the owner of the local pizzeria Pizza Olmo, which specializes in wood-fired pizza, shared this with us — and Mr. Li himself has quite a remarkable story to tell.
