Seeing the aurora borealis is on the bucket list of many, but Finland’s glass igloos are no longer enough to satisfy the craving for the best views. Dutch water architecture firm Dutch Docklands is now building a snowflake-shaped floating hotel for Norway called the "Krystall Hotel." This icy vessel drifts across the dark ocean, offering guests a completely light-pollution-free environment — the perfect and most magical setting to admire the northern lights.

The best time to see the aurora borealis is from September to April each year. Travelers from around the world flock to Nordic cities just to witness this natural wonder. Dutch Docklands is designing a snowflake-shaped hotel for Tromsø, a Norwegian city within the Arctic Circle. Beyond its unique design, this will be Europe’s first-ever floating sea hotel. There’s no need to worry about endless drifting — the hotel features a concrete foundation that anchors it within a set range between fjords, allowing it to float freely. Guests can simply lie in bed and enjoy the spectacular view of the northern lights over the sea.

The snowflake hotel will be constructed mainly of glass and will feature 86 rooms, as well as transparent-brick fireplaces, a spa, fitness center, and meeting rooms. It is expected to be completed by the end of 2016 and officially open in 2017.
